The ST is more like a frosted strawberry donut right now. Real excited for the sunny 60 degree weather expected for Sunday. 80 degree swing in 5 days.
Normal:
After a spray off and a day of salt:
No sense Spraying off until after tomorrow’s warmer temps as the roads are all still pure white.

I was going to say, judging by the plates, the steering wheel is on the wrong side for us; however, that would just make it mad JDM tyte, yo.

Keep in mind, this car is garaged. So this wasn’t even environmental salt collection while parked, this was only during my 6-7 mile commute to work, and another 3-4 miles driving around getting the car to full heat cycle before parking at the gym.

If that was a Mazda it would be a total loss by now

It has no radio and smells of a burning alpine forest as the previous owner decided to leave a whole bag of air fresheners in the storage compartment behind the seats. You know next to the bloody engine.

Alas my puny b ritish garage is no match for the girth of the mighty MR2. As for Salt I'm just gonna avoid since I'm still not a 100% sure this isn't a grey import and we know the Japanese love to rust proof cars.

Salt really is the Devil. I could not believe the number of clean older cars I saw in Colorado because they don’t use salt. Old Isuzu Troopers, Honda’s, GMT400s, even a few first gen Chevy Equinoxis LoL. All rust free looking damn near brand new. When my flight got canceled I absolutely contemplated the idea of buying a rust free old Civic and driving it home. My wife shot that down claiming that if I broke down I’d freeze to death.

Something I would suggest rust proofing/control. Had it done to my 2005 GX470 before the winter blast. Very please with it and if anything just look at the pic below. Im not sure where you are in Ohio but I drove a bit to have mine done in Anna. Though it more so I could understand the process. I will 100% be doing it on my own from now. Hell if I had a lift I would start spraying stuff on my own.

Apparently dry salt like this is not as hard on metal; it’s when it’s wet that it’s really causing issues. Or at least that’s what I’ve heard.

I’m in Cincinnati, I’m sure there’s a place around here. Thanks!

Not only am I also in Ohio, but I saw your post on your undercoating and before you said the price I was assuming it was more than 500$, it’s crazy that you can get that for 200$ on an SUV.

Yep plus thats with the salt eliminator, it was $139 if it was just the spray . If you go in the late spring or summer, you dont even need the salt eliminator . I would just wash and then spray the underside of the car before you go.
And still v ery pleased so far. I did an oil change when it was above freezing last week and was very happy to see not much had changed. There was one area that might need some more attention but it is very hard to get to and I will need to take multiple skid plates off of to get to it.
I am planning on doing an update with it in spring and I would try to grab an update pic but f that noise at 0F. Though here is one of it covered in salt.

Ah ok cool. I graduated from UC and really like the city. I dont know the Burbs very well but have been to Jungle Jims multiple times.
If you want to check try Krown’s website https://krown.com/en/

I’ll take a look. Did you do it recently, meaning there already was some corrosion and you covered it? I’m sure after this winter there will be some somewhere. But at that price I think it’s worth it.
Jungle Jim’s is right over by my work, I live in Sharonville though. Also a UC grad, ChemE ‘17. When did you graduate?

I was ‘14 and ChemE as well (Still have a strong disliking of S mirniotis)
So brief time line of my GX. I bought it in Chicago in August. It was a North Carolina car that was shipped up there. It had some rust on it as you can see above and below. But not bad. I do some routine maintenance and then have the under body sprayed in very early December.
When I had it sprayed it was 32f out side and snowing. So salt was already out. Thats when I opted for the salt Eliminator. It definitely pulled the salt off.
And one thing to clear up is, it wasnt really covering the metal. Thats was places like Zebart does with a rubber undercoat and it can rust your car faster than un coated. Watch this to see what I mean.
Krown and Fluid film are a bit different. They are more penetrating oil/ film that displace moisture, I go into some of the chemistry in my post . The same guy from above did a video explaining it some more . If you look at the sticker on my dif and tire above they are still there and not coated over. It actually took away some of the surface rust.
Lastly one thing that can be said is I did learn a bit more is the oxidation (rust) is slow in this low of temperatures. That why its crucial to get you car washed as temperatures increase. So for now as long as you keep it washed it will be fine to have it sprayed later
Today

I think most did, lol. I never had him, I think he got moved to all graduate classes by the time I got to the end of the program. Small world, lol. I’ve worked with 4 engineers who graduated between 13-15.
What brought you up that way?
Luckily, both my girlfriend and I bought these new last January. So they’ve seen a bit of salt then and what’s been this year. I’m sure there’s a bit of corrosion but it’s still early in the life. I’ll definitely be looking into it and reading your post some more. I’m hoping to keep the ST for a long time and keep it as a DD until it needs a replacement, so I can focus (no pun intended) on getting a fun-focused second car. With hit or miss stories on ST rust, I’m doing everything I can. I’m a detailer by hobby so these cars get sprayed often. I appreciate the help!

Lucky, Hated every minute of his class. Average on one of his tests was 22%.... no curve. And yep , I work with some one who was also a ChemE at UC and is a ‘12.
And that way, do you mean like the Krown rust control?
For the spray, part of the reason I went to Chicago for my GX was I knew it was a southern car. While the GX is better than the Tacomas of the 20 00s in terms of rot , it is still made in Japan and is prone to rust.
So I started looking for undercoatings and someone from a long time ago on OPPO had their jeep Wrangler sprayed with Fluid film. He posted it and how well it looked through multiple NE winters. I t hen did research from there. As I have said I didnt want Fluid Film because of the smell, to me its awful it permeates the interior. And thats when i looked for alternatives and found Krown.
It wasnt to bad of a drive for me as im up in Cbus. So m aybe an hour to Anna for me. Cinci might be a bit more.

Curious as to what work brought you up to Anna, but it makes sense that you’re more near Columbus. Anna is probably 1.5 hours from me I think? Since Sharonville is on the north side of Cincinnati. I don’t want any weird smells, I’ll see if there’s a place around here I can do it. I always have to do research first before I make these decisions.

Yeah its not to far from Cbus, plus I have driven towards A nna a couple of times previously.
For the smell, like I said in my article, the only thing I noticed after was the exhaust burning off spray. It lasted about a week and I could only smell it when I was out side the car. I would still only catch the smell when I was really looking for it for about a month. Again only when I stepped outside. I now do not smell it at all.
